Topic: Networking of Audio Devices, Presented by Troy Bomman of Crown Audio

The section had a presentation by Troy Bomman after the Harmon Professional Roadshow. This was followed by a short business meeting to plan for a new election and outline of future meetings.

Business Notes:

The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for May 18 at the Scottish Rite Cathedral. The June meeting will be at Auralex’s new location.

The NAMM show is in July. The executive committee will try to get a few passes for those who are interested.

The CEDIA expo is in September. As in the past, the section is looking to have a group day visit to the expo.

The section will conduct elections at the June meeting.

Topic: Tour of the Aearo Company and NOVICON noise and vibration measurement facility
Place: Aearo Company’s EARCAL Laboratory, 7911 Zionsville Rd., Indianapolis, IN

The Indiana Audio Engineering Society took a unique tour of the Aearo Company EARCAL hearing protection research laboratory and NOVICON noise and vibration measurement facility. This was an opportunity to see a state-of-the-art measurement facility in acoustics and noise control.

The EARCAL laboratory supports the Aearo product lines of EAR and Peltor, two of the most recognized names in hearing protection and communications. EAR invented foam earplugs and introduced them to the world in 1972. Today they offer many hearing protection options including premolded and pod plugs, earmuffs, and Professional Musician EAR® earplugs for those who desire better-sounding hearing protection. The Peltor products include a respected line of high-end earmuffs and electronic and communications products.

The NOVICON facility supports EAR Specialty Composites that provides shock, vibration, and damping solutions plus noise barriers and absorbers for business jets, military tanks and naval submarines, trucks, and PCs, as well as numerous other applications. You will find EAR products in racing and athletic helmets, running shoes, hard drives, and automobiles.

This tour began with a presentation on noise and hearing protection by Elliott H. Berger, Chair of the ANSI S12/WG11 Committee on Hearing Protectors, Past President of the National Hearing Conservation Association, and principal editor of the highly regarded best-selling text, the American Industrial Hygiene Association Noise Manual.

AES was then guided through the EARCAL facility that includes a 113 m3 reverberant test chamber with vanishingly low background noise levels, as well as state-of-the-art instrumentation for hearing protection measurements. We also visited the NOVICON laboratory for demonstrations of sound quality instrumentation and damping measurements, and a presentation of high-speed video recording techniques to evaluate shock-drop isolation testing.

Topic: The Modern Pipe Organ: A Fascinating Integration of Technologies
Place: St. Luke’s Methodist Church, 86th and Meridian Street, Indianapolis

Tom Wood, co-founder of Goulding and Wood, Indiana’s only pipe organ builders, will present a discussion about the contemporary pipe organ.  Tom will touch on topics such as: the basic organ pipe, air pressure/pneumatics, digital electronics for control and memory, electronic tone generation, midi application, acoustic considerations and the organ as a total musical instrument.

Presenters will be Jeff Kussard, industry consultant and current CEDIA Board member and CEDIA instructor, and Frank White, head of CustomMetrics, CEDIA Past Board Member and CEDIA Instructor.

Topic: Tour and Presentation by Phil Hodson, Encompass Systems

First, a big thank you to Encompass Systems for hosting us last week. The tour and talk by Phil Hodson was most interesting and lots of fun was had by all. Second, a thank you to all the hosts this year: Auralex, CEDIA, Klipsch, Koorsen and Encompass. Without their generosity, this year could not have happened. Thirdly, we have reached the end of our first season as a fully reinstated Section. Kudos go out to all who have made the past year truly worth it. To all my co-Officers and to our Executive Committee, I personally thank you for making my job easier.

We have also reached a beginning of sorts: we have such a great bunch, the continued success of our Section is almost a given. Elections were held on June 12, 2002 at our meeting and I am very proud to announce our Officers for the 2002-2003 Season:

Note: The election of Mark Fritz to Vice-Chair has left a vacancy on the Executive Committee. However, since the by-laws state that an Executive Committee can consist of “three or more” members, it was decided to leave the Committee as is.

Well, that’s about all I have. Once again, a very big thanks to all of you. It has been a wonderful experience for me and I think we are well on our way to many solid years of audio exploration.
