Advanced Intercom Systems for Live Sound, Broadcast, & Recording Environments

The Central Indiana Section of the Audio Engineering Society is pleased to announce a joint meeting to be held May 23, 2012 with SBE Chapter #25 on the topic of Advanced Intercom Systems for Live Sound, Broadcast, & Recording Environments.

The meeting will feature Steve Quillin and Michael Brown of Bosch Communications Systems, presenting on the new lines of Production Intercom systems from Telex and RTS. This will include the Digital Matrix, Partyline systems, and BTR wireless units.

We are especially excited about this meeting as it represents an ongoing effort to partner with other professional organizations within the region. The meeting is a must-attend for anyone who works in live production environments, including live sound, recording, and broadcast.

At our May meeting, we will also formally announce our elections for the year, the nominations and elections which will take place online. All interested in local AES leadership and involvement are encouraged to attend!

“Voices from the Grave” Unveiled In Guest Lecture At IU Jacobs School of Music

The Central Indiana Section of the Audio Engineering Society is pleased to bring this exciting announcement to all our members. The Department of Recording Arts in the Jacobs School of Music is delighted to welcome Dr. Patrick Feaster as special guest lecturer this coming Wednesday evening, April 18 at 5:00pm in Sweeney Hall, Room M015 of the Simon Building on the IU Bloomington campus (map).  His presentation is entitled “Voices from the Grave (1850s – 1890s): Recent Discoveries in Archeophony.”

A special feature of his presentation will be the unveiling of phonautograms recorded exactly 152 years before, to the day, on April 18, 1860.  These recordings remained mute for over one and a half centuries and have never before been heard in a public venue.

Two-time Grammy nominee Patrick Feaster is one of the world’s leading researchers specializing in the early history of recorded sound.   His investigations have helped unearth dozens of significant, heretofore unknown historical artifacts containing aural information captured 120 to 160 years ago.  He has also developed revolutionary methods to recover these ancient sounds and make them audible, in some cases for the first time since they were recorded in the nineteenth century.

In his presentation, Dr. Feaster will discuss and play examples from several of the recent archeophonic expeditions in which he has played a central role, including:

  • Newly identified wax cylinders recorded in Europe in the 1880s by William J. Hammer and Theo Wangemann, pioneering recording engineers who worked for Thomas Edison.
  • Phonautograms created in Paris in the 1850s and 1860s by French inventor Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville utilizing a stylus to etch patterns in soot-covered paper.  The discovery these scientific artifacts and successful eduction of their audio content by Feaster and his colleagues at FirstSounds.org stunned scholars and forced the rewriting of the history of sound recording to acknowledge Scott, and not Edison, as the father of recorded sound.  These revelations were profiled in The New York Times and on National Public Radio.
  • Audio recovered from paper prints made in the late 19th century, inked from the surfaces of metal phonographic discs that have since been lost to history.  Some of these prints were published in popular magazines of the era and Dr. Feaster has developed innovative techniques to educe the sounds contained on those discs from their printed images.

Patrick Feaster’s rigorous research, technical ingenuity, passion for all things audio and sheer tenacity have combined to unlock a vast wealth of ancient human sonic expression – musical instruments, acting, singing, oration and more – captured well over a century in the past and at last, available again for all to hear, study and enjoy.

Meeting Report: Central Indiana Audio Student Workshop 2012

On March 10, 2012 the Central Indiana Section of the Audio Engineering Society hosted the first annual Central Indiana Audio Student Workshop. The event was hosted by Section Chair Kyle P. Snyder, as well as assistant workshop host Jeffrey Seitz and with great assistance from the Executive Board of the Central Indiana Section, in the Music Media Production and Industry studios on the campus of Ball State University.

Like other regional events, the Central Indiana Audio Student Workshop was modeled like a mini-convention. Our goal was to provide an intimate learning environment, open to anyone interested in audio, including local professionals, university students, and high school students. The Workshop provided attendees the opportunity to improve their skills with some of the best in the business, who presented on topics in recording, mixing, live sound, and acoustics.

We also wanted to provide the Workshop free of charge, to give students of all means equal access to the audio instruction we were providing. Also, not only did we want to provide high-quality instruction for free, but also we wanted to incentivize attendance with useful giveaways from sponsors. Finally, we wanted to ensure that an acceptable student to teacher ratio was achieved, so that students felt less like they were part of a crowd and more like they were in a small classroom where they could ask questions.

Our pre-registration topped out at 180, and we saw physical attendance at 150 including numerous walk-in’s, reaching a group of audio students and professionals from every corner of the state and many from neighboring territories, who were appreciative beyond words. We couldn’t have been more pleased with how the event turned out.

Meeting Report: Tour Of The Indiana University Auditorium & Production Facilities

At this, the first of our meetings scheduled for the year which was held on January 23, 2012 at 6:30pm, we were privileged to be led on a tour of the  Indiana University Auditorium.

Gene Frazier and John DeLong led the section on a tour on the critically acclaimed facility which was originally built as a Federal Works Agency Project under the Roosevelt Presidency but which has recently undergone significant upgrades to its audio system.

A key focus of the tour was the recently installed L-Acoustics KUDO system, as well as an Avid Profile and a wiring project, all undertaken amidst a busy summer production schedule.

Hearing the constraints of the project and the quality of sound within the auditorium, all members were very impressed with the work accomplished by the house staff, outside vendors, and Robert Scoville who served as a consultant.

Tour Of The Indiana University Auditorium & Production Facilities

The Central Indiana Section of the Audio Engineering Society is pleased to announce its January 2012 meeting, a venue tour of the Indiana University Auditorium & Production Facilities.

At this event held on the campus of IU Bloomington, Audio-Visual Technician Gene Frazier will lead the section on a tour on the audio production workflows utilized by the critically acclaimed facility, originally built as a Federal Works Agency Project under the Roosevelt Presidency!

This unique event is a must-attend for anyone who involved in live event production, so plan accordingly!

Directions:
Coming from the North (heading South) on IN 37

Take either the Walnut St.-College Ave. exit (about 2 miles north of town) OR the IN 46 exit.

When you get to the new, larger intersection (Denny’s, ACE Rent-a-Car) of IN 46 and Walnut-College, turn RIGHT (southbound) on College Avenue and continue two blocks south of the Courthouse.

Turn LEFT on 3rd Street.  Continue eastbound – 3rd Street automatically leads into Atwater (one-way eastbound).  Continue on Atwater to Jordan Avenue.

Turn LEFT (northbound) on Jordan Avenue and go about a 1/4 mile where there’s a small circle.  Turn RIGHT, up a short hill and then the 1st LEFT into the upper level of the parking garage.  (This is a pay garage).

Walk northbound on Jordan to 7th Street. Turn LEFT on 7th and continue until you see the outdoor statue of Hoagy Carmichael and the grand piano.  Turn left and enter via the Stage Door.
